DeLaSalle Will Continue to Require Face Masks

We are encouraged by yesterday’s news both from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and from the Minnesota Department of Health that fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear a mask in outdoor spaces and in most indoor settings. The safety of students, staff, and visitors to our school remains our top priority. To remain consistent with our safe learning plan and the continued mask mandate by the City of Minneapolis, DeLaSalle will continue to require that all individuals wear a face mask. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Important Reminders about This Month’s School Calendar

We are approaching the final two weeks of the 2020-21 school year.

For the week of May 17, Gold Cohort students will report to campus on May 17 and 18. Silver Cohort students will report to campus on May 19 and May 20. Faculty and staff will participate in professional development on Friday, May 21 and there are no classes that day.

The week of May 24 marks the last week of classes for students in grades 9-10-11. Gold Cohort students will report to campus on May 24 and 25. There is an asynchronous learning day on Wednesday, May 26. Silver Cohort students will report to campus on May 27 and May 28. The last day of classes for all students is May 28.

DeLaSalle Will Celebrate Class of 2021 at Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation

DeLaSalle is excited to celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2021.

Baccalaureate Mass and Senior Awards Ceremony

All graduates and their families will join the school to celebrate and bless the end of high school years at the Baccalaureate Mass and Senior Recognition Ceremony. School chaplain, Fr. Kevin Kenney ‘78, will celebrate the Mass on Wednesday, May 19, at 6:30pm, in the Main Gymnasium. Due to COVID protocols, each senior will be allowed up to two guests and the event is open only to those who have RSVP’d.

Because of space limits, seniors will not process in. We ask all guests to be in their seats by 6:20pm. Seniors should be dressed in their “Sunday best” clothes. The evening also includes the complete Senior Awards program and recognition of each senior. Each senior will also receive a gift from the Alumni Association. The Mass and recognition ceremony will be livestreamed at delasalle.com for those unable to attend.

Graduation

DeLaSalle will hold Commencement exercises for the Class of 2021 on the athletic field on Thursday, May 20, at 6:45pm. Each graduate may have three guests. Dr. Aura Wharton Beck, a professor of educational leadership at the University of St. Thomas, is this year’s Commencement speaker. Leila Ambrus ‘21 and Isabella Benjamin ‘21 have been chosen by their classmates to deliver the student addresses. DeLaSalle will livestream graduation at delasalle.com for those unable to attend.

As a reminder, seniors must return all iPads and school materials before graduation rehearsal on Wednesday, May 19. DeLaSalle will withhold diplomas until students pass all required courses, complete 60 hours of required Christian Service hours; perform 10 hours of work service, and fulfill all financial obligations with the Business Office.

Watch the Spring Fine Arts Festival Here

Congratulations to all who made the Spring Fine Arts Festival a successful production – and thank you to all who tuned in last week to watch the performance! If you were unable to watch – or want to see a favorite piece of art or song again, you can watch the broadcast here

Two Seniors Earn Spotlight Education Awards

Congratulations to two seniors who have earned Spotlight Education awards through the Hennepin Theatre Trust. Kieran Rowe ‘21 has been named a Triple Threat Finalist. Veronica Kostka ‘21 has been named a Technical Theater Career Pathway Finalist. The awards recognize students for excellence in performance or technical theater and for demonstrating community leadership, teamwork and artistry. Kieran and Veronica will continue to study theatre this fall in Chicago – where Kieran plans to attend Northwestern University and Veronica plans to attend Columbia College. Both will be honored at the Spotlight Showcase on June 15 at 6:30pm. RSVP  here for the virtual event.

Join the Islander Leadership Team in 2021-22!

DeLaSalle is seeking students to join the Islander Leadership Team (ILT) for the 2021-22 school year! We need dedicated Islanders who can lead grade level retreats and Islander Pride Days, represent the school at public events, and help the Class of 2025 transition to De through the Summer Bridging Academy.

Leaders must be self-confident and self-directed juniors or seniors with strong communication skills and a willingness to lead others. An ideal ILT leader is also a positive role model, enthusiastic, and has respect for diverse ideas and personalities. Islander Leadership Team is a great way to get involved, learn valuable leadership skills, and be a part of something that is meaningful and fun! If you are interested, please submit an application by Wednesday, May 26th.

DeLaSalle Offers Free Summer Workouts for Grades 9-12

As part of the Minnesota State High School League Summer Waiver Period, DeLaSalle coaches are allowed to conduct trainings for high school student- athletes throughout June and July. The Summer Waiver Period is June 7-July 31, with a no-contact period of July 3-9. You may find what days and times our athletic teams will be hosting trainings at DeLaSalle here. Please note that some spaces are reserved for our summer youth camps.

Islanders Invited to Register for Summer Strength & Conditioning

Islander student athletes can build their strength, power, speed and other athletic qualities through DeLaSalle’s summer Strength and Conditioning program. The program is from June 7-July 30 (with no contact the week of July 4) and costs $50 per athlete. Athletes will sign up for a one-hour training period between 7:00-11:00am on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. In addition to building a robust athletic profile, the training program emphasizes injury risk reduction through exercise and other modes.  Athletes will also learn more about recovery, nutrition, and the physiology behind athletic performance.

Incoming ninth grade students in the Class of 2025 can also build their athletic profile from the ground up in the Foundations program. With an emphasis on motor learning and teaching high-quality movement, 9th grade athletes will be laying the groundwork for a tremendous career on the Island. Initial summer sessions will have an emphasis on learning basic movements of sport, and then progressing to more advanced throughout the summer! This program also costs $50 with a one-hour training period between 11:00am-1:00pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

How Students Can Get a COVID-19 Vaccine

DeLaSalle encourages all individuals who are eligible to seek a COVID-19 vaccine to get one. You may sign up for a vaccination through Minnesota’s Vaccine Connector, which is available online or by calling the Minnesota Department of Health COVID-19 Public Hotline at 1-833-431-2053. The Vaccine Connector website is available in multiple languages (select language at top right) and translation is available for phone calls. You may also seek vaccination opportunities through local health clinics and pharmacies. Please contact Caroline Sell, Health Services Coordinator, with questions or to receive additional information and resources.

Free COVID-19 Testing

Students and families participating in onsite activities are encouraged to seek regular COVID-19 testing as a form of screening for illness. Now that the State has greatly increased testing capacity at free community testing locations (in addition to the free at-home testing kits), getting a COVID-19 test is quick and easy. Students and families who have no symptoms or exposure are encouraged to get tested regularly.

  • Free community testing locations (saliva tests through Vault Health, run by the State)
Scroll to find your city. Locations include Minnneapolis (Convention Center), St. Paul (Roy Wilkins), MSP Airport (Terminal 1), Anoka (Armory), Bloomington (Creekside Community Center), Brooklyn Park (Starlite Center)

  • Search all testing locations (saliva or nasal swabs, includes pharmacies, clinics, etc.)
Search by city or zip code

Order your free at home testing kit (saliva tests through Vault Health, run by the State)
Drop off completed tests at a UPS store. Or, take the test the night before and drop off the completed/sealed test kit in the main school office on the same morning as on-site tests for DeLaSalle employee (May 21, June 4).

Around DeLaSalle

National Honor Society members are making DeLaSalle and the island a better place for everyone. As part of their chapter service project, NHS members recently hosted a study session to help students master what they’re learning in class. NHS also invited students to participate in an island clean up and then finished the day with a game night for students to unwind and build community. Thank you NHS!
