DeLaSalle congratulates Isabella Benjamin ‘21, who has been selected as the school’s 2020-21 recipient of the Athena Award.
The Athena Award is given annually to one senior female athlete in each Twin Cities high school and is based on excellence in individual sports or for participation and accomplishments in team sports. Award recipients are traditionally honored at a luncheon in the spring, but there will not be an in-person luncheon this year in Minneapolis because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Isabella is a four-year letter winner in girls’ soccer and helped lead the Islanders to the Tri-Metro Conference championship in 2018. She has been a captain for the past two years and has earned All Conference honors the past three years.
Soccer isn’t the only sport in which Isabella has participated. She was also a member of the girls’ basketball team that won a state championship in 2019, the team’s fourth in program history. She has also participated with the track and field team and finished fifth in the conference in 2019 for the mile, in which she set a personal record with a time of 5:35.
Isabella is active in mock trial and ALAS (Association of LatinX and Allied Students). She also serves in the National Honor Society and is the secretary of the DeLaSalle chapter for the 2020-21 school year. She was recently named a Distinguished Scholar in the Class of 2021, having earned that distinction for achieving a 4.0 cumulative grade point average through the first semester of her senior year.
Isabella is undecided about where she will attend college in the fall, but plans to major in international relations.
