Welcome to the Second Semester!

We are excited to begin the second half of our school year together when the second semester starts with faculty returning on Monday, January 4. Our faculty and staff will continue the DeLaSalle tradition of providing students with a relevant, practical education that is grounded in faith and the belief that who you are is more important than what you have or where you come from. The relationships that we have formed in the first months of school and those that we will develop and nurture in the coming weeks and months will respond to the individual needs of our students and prepare them for their next level of education.

Class Schedule

In order for DeLaSalle educators to be best prepared for students’ return, we will conduct three days of professional planning from January 4-6. Our first two days of instruction will occur online for all students with periods 1-4 meeting on Thursday, January 7 and periods 5-8 meeting on Friday, January 8. Students received their second semester class schedule in their Islander Apps email.

Hybrid Learning Resumes January 11

We have eagerly anticipated the physical return of students to campus when our hybrid model of instruction resumes on Monday, January 11. In response to feedback many of you shared in our recent parent survey, we will adjust the makeup of our learning cohorts to give students an opportunity to learn with different classmates than they may have seen in the first semester. Students will be grouped by birth month rather than last name. The Gold Cohort will include students born from January through June and will attend in-person classes on Mondays and Tuesdays. The Silver Cohort will include students born from July through December and attend in-person classes on Thursdays and Fridays. Students will participate in distance learning on the three other days of each week they are not physically at school. Students in the Blue Cohort will continue in full distance learning five days a week.

School Transportation Routes Change, Service Resumes January 11

DeLaSalle is adjusting school transportation routes to reflect the change in cohort composition. If your child uses school transportation, please look for a communication the week of January 4 with updated bus route and pickup time and location. School transportation will resume on January 11.

Thank You for Following Health & Safety Protocols

We thank each member of our DeLaSalle family for closely following our safety protocols to ensure a healthy school community. This prevented any secondary transmission of COVID-19 in the school in the first semester and we hope to maintain this positive trend. Please continue to wear a face covering in the school, check your temperature when you arrive, maintain a physical distance of six feet, and sanitize your hands regularly. You can find a reminder about health and safety protocols on our COVID-19 webpage and in our Pandemic Preparedness Plan.

Student Life and Class Retreats

Staff from the Dean of Students, Lasallian Ministry, and Student Activities offices have partnered to offer more additional community-building experiences for students in the second semester. Lasallian Ministry will conduct grade-level class retreats on select Wednesdays. You can find the dates of these retreats in an upcoming issue of “Looking Ahead at DeLaSalle.”

Health Officials Issue Updated Quarantine Guidance

Following updated quarantine guidance from MDH and CDC, DeLaSalle will begin implementing shortened quarantine options for qualifying situations beginning in January. Our Pandemic Preparedness Plan and other COVID-19 guidance documents reflect this updated policy. We remind families, students, and staff that the purpose of quarantine is to keep individuals who may have been exposed to COVID-19 away from others to reduce the risk of further transmission. As such, a 14-day quarantine is still recommended to encompass the average incubation period, but under limited circumstances individuals may be permitted to return as early as 7 or 10 days following exposure. Please see the “Quarantine” section of our Pandemic Preparedness Plan for details. If you have questions about the impact of this policy on our operations and our community, please contact Health Services Coordinator Caroline Sell.

Changing a Letter Grade to Pass “P”

DeLaSalle will offer students the opportunity to change a passing letter grade to a grade of “P” (Pass) for the first semester in recognition of the ongoing challenges many students experienced as a result of the pandemic. Faculty will report first semester grades on Monday, January 4 and families will receive an email with first semester grades by January 8. The report card communication will include a Google form link for those who wish to exercise the “Pass” grade option. If you select this option, you must complete the form by Friday, January 15. Any grade changed to a “P” will not count towards the student’s grade point average (GPA). As a reminder, all failing grades will automatically be changed to NG (no grade) and students must recover the credit if the course is required for graduation.

Winter Sports Start Monday

Winter sports will begin in the new year! The first day of practices and tryouts for winter sports is Monday, January 4. You can find specific practice/tryout time and locations and game schedules for each sport in Parent/Athlete/Coach sessions recorded by the Student Activities office and available here.

Any student who wishes to participate in a winter sport must register here and have a current physical on file with the Student Activities office. We also encourage students and families to sign up for the Remind app, which coaches use to communicate important information throughout the season.

All students participating in winter sports must follow state guidance. This ensures a safe environment for participants which will allow DeLaSalle to successfully continue these activities. We strongly recommend anyone who travels outside of Minnesota complete a 14-day quarantine when they return to Minnesota before attending in-person school events. Coaches will work with students to provide an adequate tryout and return to participation process following the quarantine.

Student activities and clubs will resume in-person meetings the week of January 11, as we resume our hybrid learning model.

Students: Complete iOS 14 Update Before Classes Resume

Students should update to iOS 14 over Christmas break to ensure app functionality. App updates will be pushed out periodically over break. Please make sure this update is completed before January 4, 2021. Make sure your device is backed up to the iCloud before updating. The update can be found by going to Settings > General > Software Update. If you do not have enough storage available on your device, please delete any non school apps and/or apps you do not need for school to make room for the update.

Entrance Exam Options for Prospective Students

Prospective students and families in the Class of 2025 can take a key step forward in the admissions process.

As we communicated in the December 11 “Looking Ahead at DeLaSalle”, prospective students have two options this year for completing the Entrance Exam admission requirement. Students may submit a standardized test score from grade 6-7-8 (provided there are subsections within the exam in areas of Reading and mathematics and national percentile scores). Or students may register for an on-campus Entrance Exam that will be offered each Saturday in January at DeLaSalle (January 9, 16, 23, 30), from 8:45am-12:00pm. Schedule an exam here.

We accept applications for admissions at any time; you may submit your application here. Applications for potential admission are due by Friday, February 12.

Families May Now Apply for Financial Aid for 2021-22

DeLaSalle families may now begin to apply for financial aid for the 2021-22 school year through Tuition Aid Data Services (TADS). You may start your application on the TADS website using the login you created the first time you logged into TADS. This financial aid worksheet can help you gather all of the information you need and will help save time completing your actual financial aid application. You are able to use your 2019 taxes but will still need to upload or fax a copy of your 2020 W-2. TADS will communicate by email if they have any questions or need any more documentation.  Please make sure to check your email.  For a refresher and access to the TADS worksheet, go to our website.
