Addressing COVID-19 in Our Community and Building Temperatures

We open this week’s email blast with an important message about our response to COVID-19 in the greater community and its impact on DeLaSalle.

  • Even though state data reveals COVID-19 is significantly more prevalent in some counties where our students live (Sherburne and Anoka, for example), there still has been no identified transmission of the virus within our school setting,
  • You.may view the county-specific data on the Minnesota Department of Health website. Please note that county case counts provide one data point that we use, in combination with other factors, to evaluate school operations. We communicate regularly with a COVID-19 regional coordinator from the state regarding the timing if we need to adjust our learning model.
  • Your child’s well-being and safety remain the top priority in our planning. We have heard from students and parents alike about how much you appreciate the face-to-face interaction allowed within the hybrid model, which provides an opportunity for us to maintain and strengthen our community. For example, 92.7% of the ninth grade class have chosen the on-campus hybrid format. We also recognize the flexibility afforded to those students and families who have chosen full distance learning.
  • We are aware of cooler temperatures in some B building classrooms. As we have previously communicated, we are working with Nasseff Mechanical Contractors to upgrade our HVAC system, which is scheduled for completion by the time students return from Christmas break. Our temporary measures to meet indoor air quality standards – the installation of fans and bipolar ionization along with keeping windows open – has bought us time until Nasseff can complete installation of our new HVAC system.
  • DeLaSalle has restored the functionality of the steam radiator in the south B building stairway to better heat the south side of the building. We measured and observed that classroom temperatures warmed up following this action. Maintenance staff will continue to monitor temperatures throughout each day. We understand the forecast is favorable for the next school week. As colder temperatures return, we are prepared to employ further interim strategies, including space heaters, individual air filtration units, and relocation of B building classes into open A building classrooms until Nasseff completes their work.

You may always find more information about DeLaSalle’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, including our Pandemic Preparedness Plan, on our COVID-19 webpage.

DeLaSalle Hosts Successful Open House Weekend; Schedule Your Tour, Participate in November 14 Drive-Up Open House

Thank you to the more than 200 families who decided to take a look at DeLaSalle during the Drive-Up and/or Virtual Open Houses of last weekend. We were so excited to meet members of the Class of 2025 and have more opportunities to engage with prospective students and families in the coming weeks.

We welcome individual meetings/tours with parents and students, because every “story” is important and every question deserves an answer. To arrange a visit, please schedule one here or contact the Office of Admission at 612-676-7679 or at You may start an application to DeLaSalle here.

Because of the success of the first offering, we will host a second Drive-Up Open House on Saturday, November 14, from 9:00am-12:00pm. We invite prospective students and families to give us a second look or visit us for the first time if they were unable to join us for our October 24 Drive-Up Open House or October 26 Virtual Open House. So we can be prepared for your visit, please register here.

Students Surveyed About Hybrid Model; Parent Survey Coming Soon

DeLaSalle this week asked students to complete a short survey to share their feedback about the hybrid model of learning. Please prompt your student to check his or her Islander Apps email or their Canvas account for a link to the survey. We ask students to complete the survey by Thursday, November 5.

Families May Request Transportation Reimbursement

Some, though not all, school districts provide DeLaSalle families an opportunity to request transportation assistance for eligible students who are legal residents of that school district. The student’s primary contact received an email this week with a link to complete a form requesting reimbursement, known as Form 1000. De families requesting reimbursement must click on the link and complete the form before November 5.

All families who live outside the Minneapolis and Saint Paul city limits must complete this form.  For students who receive transportation through DeLaSalle, this is part of the transportation contract agreement.

DeLaSalle Theatre Presents “The Spitfire Grill” This Weekend

DeLaSalle Theatre presents its fall musical “The Spitfire Grill” with 2:00pm performances this Saturday and Sunday on the athletic field.

This “sing through” musical triumph is an inspiring celebration of fresh starts and the power of what one person can do. It tells the story of Percy Talbot, who seeks to find her way following her release from prison. The show is free, but seating is limited and patrons must reserve tickets here. Freewill offerings are accepted. Those in attendance must wear a face covering and practice physical distancing.

DeLaSalle Celebrates Mass November 3 for All Saints Day, All Souls Day

DeLaSalle will observe a Mass in the spirit of both All Saints Day and All Souls Day on Tuesday, November 3 at 10:00am. School chaplain Fr. Kevin Kenney ‘78, will celebrate the Mass, with a livestream available on the Lasallian Ministry page in Canvas.

Lasallian Ministry invites students, families, teachers, and staff to bring in a framed picture of a loved one who has passed away to place on the ofrenda table that will be a key piece of our celebration. You may bring a framed picture of your loved one with a post-it note on the back with your name and your loved one’s name to Ms. Lyngen’s classroom (B207) by Monday, November 2. You may also email a photo to Nicole Stecklein by 2:00pm on Monday and Lasallian Ministry will print and frame the photo for you.

Around DeLaSalle

The planter’s box around the statue of St. John Baptist de La Salle has a fresh look. As part of his Eagle Scout Award project, Daniel Kennedy ‘21 worked this fall with fellow Scouts and leaders of Boy Scout Troop 3089, sponsored by Christ the King Catholic Church, to remove rotted railroad ties that once surrounded the statue in Founder’s Park and replace them with a brick ring filled with topsoil. Perennials will be planted in the box in the spring. (Photo courtesy: Kathy Busch, DeLaSalle staff)
