Prayer for life by Saint John Paul II

O Mary, bright dawn of the new world,
Mother of the living,
to you do we entrust the cause of life:
Look down, O Mother, upon the vast numbers
of babies to be born,
of the poor whose lives are made difficult,
of men and women who are victims of brutal violence,
of the elderly and the sick killed
by indifference or out of misguided mercy.
Grant that all who believe in your Son
may proclaim the Gospel of life
with honesty and love to the people of our time.
Obtain for them the grace
To accept that Gospel as a gift ever new,
the joy of celebrating it with gratitude
throughout their lives
And the courage to bear witness to it resolutely,
in order to build,
together with all people of good will,
the civilization of truth and love,
to the praise and glory of God,
the Creator and lover of life.

In the news…

Thanks to our robust partnership between parents, students, and staff, we’ve successfully finished five weeks of the 2020-21 school year with a hybrid model of instruction.  As you know, our model was formed in large part by parent and student feedback throughout the summer.  We thank you for your helpful perspectives, and we have repeatedly witnessed your strong support for our students, staff and other.families. Together, we move forward, and we will continue to look out for each other’s well being.

As part of our collaboration, we once again invite all DeLaSalle families to join school leadership in a virtual listening session TONIGHT at 6:00pm (with a Spanish speaking session at 7:00pm).  We will share several important updates in addition to reviewing some important lessons we have learned from the first weeks of school.  For many of our new Islander families, we will also preview the many useful benefits of setting up a Canvas Observer account to track your child’s academic progress.  Thank you for making time in your busy schedule to join us via Google Meet at 6:00pm on Thursday!  Please note: Our capacity on Google Meet is capped at 250 participants. We will share a recording of the Meet for those unable to participate in the October 9 “Looking Ahead at DeLaSalle.”

Join the Green Team after school TODAY. We will meet at 3:00 in front of school. Kate Clayton from Friends of the Mississippi will be helping us clean out the front gardens and identify invasive plants. Please join us if you can. We will also share in community cocoa and cookies. Dress for outdoor work.

Students will have classes on Monday and Tuesday. On Monday, the Gold Cohort will report to campus. On Tuesday, the Silver Cohort will report to campus. There is no asynchronous learning on Wednesday, as juniors will be taking the PSAT and teachers will be preparing for Parent-Student-Teacher conferences. There are no classes on Thursday or Friday.

Parent-Student-Teacher conferences are scheduled next Wednesday from 3:00-8:00pm and on Thursday, October 15, from 11:00am-7:00pm. Parents may sign up for conferences using the MyConferenceTime software. Conferences will be virtual via Google Meet and will occur in seven minute increments. Click here for more information about conferences.

Join us as we recognize and lift up the dignity and sanctity of life with the following opportunities:

  • Baby Item Drive: New baby items (diapers, wipes, bottles, etc.) can be dropped off in the pack and play located in Albers Atrium. Items will be donated to Abria Pregnancy Life Center
  • Sock Drive: Each grade level will compete together to bring in the most socks to donate to St. Stephen’s Shelter and Sharing and Caring Hands. NEW socks (in their original packaging) can be dropped off in the bins located in the Albers Atrium.

Meet with admissions representatives from over 600 colleges at the first ever virtual College Fairs. The fairs are scheduled on Monday, October 12, from 1:00-9:00pm, and on Sunday, October 18, from 12:00-8:00pm (click on the date to see which colleges will be participating and how to register).

Parents and students are encouraged to attend and spend some time learning about each school, connect, and ask questions.

Learn all about financial aid at our virtual Financial Aid Planning Night on Monday, October 19, from 7:00-8:00pm. This presentation prepares students, parents and caretakers on the many options for paying for college. Take away tools for navigating the new FAFSA; applying to colleges, researching scholarships, grants and loan options; all in a way that makes sense for your family. Joy Rockwell, associate director of financial aid at Saint Mary’s University, will present. Look for the Google Meet code on the Guidance page of the Islanders course in Canvas, which will also include links to resources from the Minnesota Office of Higher Education and Ms. Rockwell’s presentation.

This month we are celebrating Latino heritage. Come join us at the following events:

  • Tomorrow: Papel Picado making WIN sessions
  • Tomorrow and Monday, October 12: Dulces and Music in Albers Atrium before school

The Coalition of Asian-American Leaders is currently seeking young Asian-American youth to join a youth leadership and organizing group called Becoming Organizers Becoming Advocates (BOBA). To learn more about what this group is and for the application (due October 18th), please go to

Male students of color who live in Brooklyn Park or Brooklyn Center are invited to consider a special mentorship program facilitated by DeLaSalle alumnus Antonio Smith ’88. Please email Ms. Hodapp if you would like to know more.

Please renew your 2020-21 free and reduced lunch applications. If you qualified last year, your benefits will expire on Saturday, October 10. Please apply online.
