The spread of coronavirus across Minnesota and the United States cut the winter sports season short for DeLaSalle basketball teams as they prepared to defend their Class AAA state titles.
The top-seeded varsity girls’ team had won the section championship and advanced past the first two rounds of the state tournament before the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) suspended play after the semi-final round. DeLaSalle would have faced #2 seed Becker in the state championship. The Islanders finished with a 26-4 record, with six victories over top ten ranked teams, including two wins over conference rival Holy Angels, Eden Prairie and St. Michael-Albertville. Nurjei Weems `20 and Kiani Lockett `22 were named to the Class AAA All-State first team by the coaches’ association.
Hours after the girls’ state semifinal win, the boys’ varsity team punched its ticket to the state tournament with a 71-45 section championship victory over Waconia. The Islanders returned to the state tournament, where they would have sought their eighth state title in the last nine years had their tournament not also been canceled due to COVID-19. The boys’ team finishes with a 24-5 overall record, including seven victories over top ten ranked teams, including Hopkins and Cornerstone (TX).
Congratulations to the players, their families, and team coaches for continuing the Islander tradition of excellence.
