You’re Invited to the DeLaSalle Christmas Concert Wednesday

You are invited to join us as the Bel Canto and A Cappella Choirs, Chamber Orchestra, Concert Band, and Symphonic Band present their Christmas Concert this Wednesday, December 11. Doors open at 6:30pm. The concert begins at 7:00pm.

We remind all parents that, in lieu of the regular monthly meeting in December, the Parent Association will provide treats and good cheer before the annual DeLaSalle Christmas Concert. We are in need of some volunteers to provide holiday spirit to the hundreds of concert attendees.  Please email Parent Association chair, Jackie Schluter Johnson, if you are interested in helping at this festive event.

Jewelry Sale Supports Twin School in Kenya

You can support DeLaSalle’s twin school in Kenya (and find a thoughtful Christmas gift for someone special). DeLaSalle will sell pieces of jewelry from Kenya and Ethiopia both before and after the Christmas Concert on Wednesday, December 11. All proceeds will benefit Mwangaza College, a Lasallian trade school in Nakuru, Kenya, with whom DeLaSalle has a “twinning school” relationship. DeLaSalle each year also sends a third of the profits from all out-of-uniform wristband sales to the school. This fall we welcomed Brother Ghebres Habte, the Brother Visitor of the Lwanga District which includes Mwangaza, when he visited the United States in September.

DeLaSalle Celebrates Christmas with Liturgy, Program Thursday
DeLaSalle will celebrate Christmas with a liturgy and program on Thursday, December 12, following the first class period. Scripture, prayer, and song (and a visit from Santa) will help the Islander community reflect on the birth of Christ. DeLaSalle President Barry Lieske will also provide his annual Christmas reflection. Twelfth grade men will perform this year’s rendition of “The 12 Days of Christmas” while the 12th grade women will sing The Christmas Song.
Parents in Prayer Gathers Friday

Join DeLaSalle parents in prayer during your lunch hour next Friday, December 13. Parents in Prayer gathers from 12:00-1:00pm in the Thies Lab creative side (D207). The group gathers on campus monthly to lift up our community in prayer. We hope students, staff, families and friends at DeLaSalle will feel encouraged by the knowledge that people care about them, are excited for them and are PRAYING FOR THEM! You may submit prayer requests, which may remain anonymous, to prayer boxes located in the main office, Lasallian Ministry, or Theology classrooms.

Track Your Child’s Minneapolis Bus with MyStop App

A free app allows parents of students who ride a Minneapolis bus route to track their child’s bus. Created by the Minneapolis and Suburban / Monarch Bus Company, the MyStop app is free for Android and iPhone users. Click here for instructions on how to download and sign up. The app does not show real-time location but is accurate within 3-4 minutes. As a remember, students should always be at their bus stop at least 5 minutes before the scheduled pick-up time.

Friday Deadline to Apply for ACT Prep Class

Eleventh grade students who plan to take the ACT exam in February or April are invited to register for an ACT prep class. Mary Ann Dorsher, a past DeLaSalle parent, current Trustee, and co-founder of the ACT Ready program, teaches the classes, during which students take five full exams and review their errors. Learn more information about the class here. Students may register here.

Entrance Exam for Class of 2024

The Entrance Exam is one of four pieces required for admission to DeLaSalle. Eighth grade students register for the exam in the Albers Atrium between 8:00–8:25am, and it takes only 3-5 minutes to register. There is no need to register for the exam before the 11th, nor does DeLaSalle require an application for admission before the 11th.  There is no fee to take the Entrance Exam at DeLaSalle (nor to apply for admission), and we provide all materials. Parents are encouraged to stay for a thorough and informative seminar about many “parent-type” topics while their daughters and sons are testing.

Around DeLaSalle

Father Kevin Kenney ‘78, a DeLaSalle Trustee and the pastor of St. Olaf Catholic Church in Minneapolis, delivered a homily Friday as we celebrated Mass for the feast of the Immaculate Conception. This week also saw DeLaSalle students receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation as Islanders prepare themselves this Advent for the birth of Jesus. Theology classes will also spend time in prayerful reflection in the school chapel this month and all Islanders are invited to Mass in the chapel each Tuesday morning before school. Beatification for Brother James Miller Tomorrow in Guatemala

A De La Salle Christian Brother from Wisconsin who once taught in the Twin Cities will move a step closer to sainthood this weekend when he becomes the first Brother from the United States to be beatified. The beatification ceremony for Brother James Miller occurs tomorrow (December 7) at 10:00am in Huehuetenango, Guatemala and you can watch a livestream of it here. Gunmen shot the 37-year-old Miller to death in February 1982 outside a school for indigenous children where he was working. Pope Francis approved Miller’s beatification last year, after ruling that he died as a martyr for the faith. A miracle must be attributed to Brother James after his beatification in order for him to be considered for canonization to sainthood. Read more here about Brother James

Scholarship Spotlight Features Two Scholarships

The Guidance Office encourages students to apply for these college scholarships:

  • The Coolidge Scholarship is an annually awarded, full-ride, presidential scholarship that covers a student’s tuition, room, board, and expenses for four years of undergraduate study. Anyone of any background, pursuing any academic discipline of study, may apply to this non-partisan, need-blind, program. Students apply for the Coolidge Scholarship during their junior year of high school.
  • Graduating seniors in the Class of 2020 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average and composite ACT score of 18 can apply for a Wallin Education Partners scholarship. The scholarship includes up to $16,000 over four years for students attending a four-year public or private institution in Iowa, Minnesota, the Dakotas, Wisconsin, or any historically black college or university (HBCU) in the country.

Apply Now for Urban Immersion Retreat in Chicago

DeLaSalle students can explore issues of justice and the reality of oppression during an urban immersion retreat February 21-23 at the Brother David Darst Center in Chicago. The workshop is open to 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. Through partnerships with local agencies, retreat participants get to know people served by these agencies, challenge stereotypes, confront fears, and break down barriers. The cost of the retreat is $260 and students will earn 18 Christian Service hours. Continue reading and apply here.

Senior Yearbook Ad Orders Due Tuesday

Every year, DeLaSalle Yearbook staff offers parents and families of 12th grade students the opportunity to publicly recognize or pay tribute to a senior with a Parent Senior Ad in the yearbook. The Senior Ads are a huge part of the yearbook that students turn to right away when they receive their book. There are two ways to order the ads:

You may design the ads yourself or have the yearbook staff design them. Please send photos and text you may want in your ad to yearbook@delasalle.com and a proof will be emailed to you to approve.

Parent Senior Ads are due by Tuesday, December 10.
