All DeLaSalle parents are invited to the next regular meeting of the school year on Monday, April 8, from 6:30-8:00 pm, in Room D-104, the Richard M. Schulze Lab. In addition to social time and introductions, our guest speaker will be Mr. Jim Benson, principal of DeLaSalle for the past seven years. As principal, Mr. Benson has administrative responsibility for the academic and student life programs at De, and he also sits on the Academic and Student Life Committee of the Board of Trustees.
Given the time limits of a presentation, Jim will give an overview of the evolving academic programming at De, emerging trends, and strategic goals. The presentation will touch on curriculum development, student life and environment, effective implementation of technology, global connections, staff development, effective responses to student needs, and more.
Of course, all of this will be presented with Jim’s unique perspective as principal of a Catholic and Lasallian high school, where relationships matter in a community of talented and diverse students who want to be prepared as best possible for college and career.
Mr. Benson also served as an English teacher and assistant principal at DeLaSalle before he became principal in 2012. During his tenure as principal, he has twice led the school through its regular five-year re-accreditation cycles in 2013 and 2018. (The 2018 re-accreditation process was so successful that DeLaSalle earned the “School of Excellence” distinction from AdvancEd, the organization with offers accreditation to more than 24,000 schools nationwide.) A native of New York City, he also served as a teacher and administrator in Catholic schools there before moving to the Twin Cities with his family in 2005.
Mr. Benson also is a valued colleague and leader among administrative colleagues in other schools. He has served as chair of the Archdiocesan Catholic schools’ principals group, which meets regularly to share professional perspectives and best practices. In late-February, he was selected to serve as the vice president of the Lasallian Association of Secondary School Chief Administrators (LASSCA) for the 2019-20 school year. LASSCA fosters a cooperative spirit among the principals, presidents, and chief administrators of secondary schools in the Lasallian Region of North America and the organization works with Region leadership to promote the Lasallian mission.
We hope you can join us. The treats will be good. The conversation will be better. Questions are anticipated. New ideas are always welcome. We hope to see you on April 8th!
