Girls’ Basketball Earns State Tournament Berth; Boys’ Basketball Advances in Section Playoffs

Congratulations to the DeLaSalle girls’ basketball team, which earned its third consecutive state tournament appearance with a 65-49 victory over Totino-Grace March 7 in the Section 4AAA championship. The Islanders will play in the Class 3A state quarterfinal game on Wednesday, March 13 at Maturi Pavilion at the University of Minnesota. The game time will be determined by which seed DeLaSalle receives; the seeding meeting is this weekend. We will communicate information about the game and potential impacts on the school schedule at

Meanwhile, the boys’ basketball team is in the middle of section playoffs. The top-seeded Islanders defeated Minneapolis Roosevelt 68-25 on March 5 and will face #5 seed Minneapolis Patrick Henry on Saturday, March 9. Please note, the game will start at 1:00pm, which is earlier than originally published, because of the heavy snowstorm that will impact the Twin Cities. March Parent Association Meeting Postponed

The March meeting of the DeLaSalle Parent Association has been postponed. The next monthly meeting will be Monday, April 8, from 6:30-8:00pm in the Schulze Learning Lab (D104).

DeLaSalle Meets with Alumni & Friends in Florida

DeLaSalle President, Barry Lieske, and members of the school’s Advancement team will meet next week with alumni and friends in Florida. The annual visit gives us a chance to share a state of the school while also reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones. The Naples luncheon will take place at The Club at Barefoot Beach in Bonita Springs on Wednesday, March 13. If you or other Islanders will be in the area, please join us. Contact Veronica Rucker for more information. The Florida visit comes two weeks after DeLaSalle staff held a successful series of visits with alumni and friends in Arizona.

Spring Sports Begin

The first practices and tryouts for spring sports are starting, even though the snow on the ground makes it hard to think of outdoor activities. DeLaSalle offers spring sports in baseball, softball, track and field, boys’ and girls’ golf, boys’ and girls’ lacrosse, and boys’ tennis. You can find when practices will be held and how to contact spring coaches here.

Host An International Student in 2019-20

Islanders are known for their welcoming hospitality. DeLaSalle is looking for families interested in hosting an international student in 2019-20. Hosting a student offers a unique opportunity to build a special connection, explore new customs, and share American culture. Host families receive a housing stipend. Please contact the Office of Admission if you are interested.

Grade Level Reconciliation

Tuesdays, March 12, 19, 26

Students in each grade level will gather once this month for the Sacrament of Reconciliation at St. Boniface Catholic Church in northeast Minneapolis. Students who are not Catholic may also meet with a priest if they wish. Theology teachers will help prepare students in classes ahead of their grade level gathering. Twelfth grade students participated in the Sacrament on March 7. Eleventh graders will take part on Tuesday, March 12; tenth graders on March 19, and ninth graders on March 26.

Regional History Day Competition

Monday, March 18, Augsburg University

Thirty-seven History Day projects created by DeLaSalle students will compete at the Metro Senior High Regional History Day competition for the chance to advance to the 2019 Minnesota State History Day on May 4. Because the projects were so strong, the Minnesota Historical Society graciously allowed DeLaSalle to add more projects to the list originally entered in the regional competition. Click here to see the updated list. History Day is an annual project in the 11th grade Social Studies curriculum that gives juniors an opportunity to become expert historians by selecting and researching a topic of their choice around a national theme, which this year is “Triumph and Tragedy in History.”

Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences

Wednesday, March 20, 1:00-8:00pm

Parent-Student-Teacher conferences allow parents, students, and teachers an opportunity to discuss a student’s academic progress. No appointment is necessary to conference with a teacher. The conferences were rescheduled to March 20 from their original dates of March 14 and 15. As students and parents can benefit by hearing the same commendations and recommendations from teachers, we strongly suggest students and parents attend conferences and participate in these conversations together.

Lasallian Ministry Summer Service Immersion Trip Application Deadline

Sunday, March 31

Lasallian Ministry offers two summer service immersion experiences this year for DeLaSalle students. Current ninth, tenth, and eleventh graders may participate in the Chicago-based Lasallian Youth Assembly June 17-21, engaging in prayer, reflection, service, and education sessions around social justice and Catholic social teaching with students from other Lasallian schools. Current eleventh grade students are invited to build relationships, learn about the history and culture of the Lakota people, and serve the community of Eagle Butte, South Dakota on a weeklong Cheyenne River service immersion trip July 28-August 2. Learn more here about each trip, including cost and how to apply.

Spring Break

April 1-5

We wish students and families a safe, relaxing Spring Break. Please note that classes will resume on Monday, April 8. Please note, too, that many staff choose to take time off during the break. You may find how to contact an individual staff member through our online Staff Directory.

Around DeLaSalle

DeLaSalle students this week hosted a handful of the world’s top athletes who are in the United States through the China Champions Program at the University of Minnesota. The delegation includes the world’s best weightlifters, skiers, volleyball players, and boxers. Islanders studying Mandarin Chinese practiced their speaking and listening skills during lunch and class. (Photo courtesy: Kristin Lundstrum, DeLaSalle staff)
