Congratulations to 2018-19 DeLaSalle Quiz Bowl program for sustaining a run of excellence that surpasses almost all activity programs in the state. For the 13th consecutive year, DeLaSalle has qualified a team for the National Quiz Bowl Championships in May. Head coach Martin Marrin has built a highly-competitive program, all the more impressive considering that De usually competes against much larger metro-area schools during the year.
The four-person DeLaSalle “A” team of Ben Maruggi `19, Joseph Phelan `19, Andrew Amell `20, and Sebastian Dominguez-Giron `20 has compiled an 10-2 record in the Minnesota regular competition season, including match victories against teams from Benilde-St. Margaret’s, Blake, Mounds Park Academy, St. Paul Academy, and Washburn.
High schools earn qualifying invitations to both the State and National Championships by virtue of their performance during the regular season. After the Roseville meet on January 24, the Islanders have now earned their ticket to Nationals yet again. Currently,” DeLaSalle A” is one of only seven teams in the state (of the 128 competing) with at least ten match victories on the season. Next up for the Islanders will be the Minnesota State Quiz Bowl Championships in February, having secured one of the 16 available spots in the field.
Maruggi and Phelan are each ranked among the top 40 individuals in points scored per match, among over 600 individual Quiz Bowl participants in the Minnesota High School Quiz Bowl League. Likewise, Ian Silver `20 and Kieran Rowe `21, while competing with other DeLaSalle teams, are also listed among the top 40 in the state in points per match.
De continues to field one of the largest overall programs in the state, often entering multiple teams of 3-5 individuals in a particular competition. The program has built an impressive legacy and we salute the entirety of the team and their coach, Mr. Marrin.
