Congratulations to 2017-18 DeLaSalle Quiz Bowl program for sustaining a run of excellence that surpasses almost all activity programs in the state. For the 12th consecutive year, DeLaSalle has qualified to send a team to the National Quiz Bowl Championships in May. Head Coach Martin Marrin has built a highly competitive program, all the more impressive considering that De usually competes against much larger metro-area schools during the year.
The four-person DeLaSalle “A” team of Don Truong ’18, Ben Maruggi ’19, Andrew Amell ’20, and Sebastian Dominguez-Giron ’20 compiled an 10-2 record in the Minnesota regular competition season, including match victories against teams from Irondale, Roseville, Smiley, St. Paul Academy and Washburn. By adding a first-round victory over St. Thomas Academy in the Minnesota State Championships on February 15, the Islanders earned their ticket to nationals yet again.
Maruggi ended the regular season ranked 28th in points among over 600 individual Quiz Bowl participants in the Minnesota High School Quiz Bowl League.
DeLaSalle came close to qualifying a second team for nationals as well, as the team of Adaire Criner ’19, Joseph Phalen ’19, Luke Timmerman ’19, Meryt Watkins-Wright ’19, and Darlington Yonly ’19 compiled an 8-4 rcord during the season and finished just four places out of the last nationals qualifying position. De continues to field one of the largest overall programs in the state, often entering multiple teams of 3—5 individuals in a particular competition.
