Several students from the award-winning DeLaSalle theatre program have been selected to perform in the Hennepin Theatre Trust’s  “Spotlight Showcase” on June 12 and 13 at 7:00pm at the State Theater in downtown Minneapolis.  The 12th annual Showcase, a two-night event staged each June, features the absolute best among Minnesota high school musical theatre students and programs.

The event is one of the many ways in which Hennepin Theatre Trust supports high school theatre through its Spotlight Education program.  Spotlight Education engages Minnesota high school students in the performing arts, as the flagship education program of the Trust.

Of particular note for DeLaSalle, Jake Nelson `17 is among 24 finalists – 12 male and 12 female — for the “Triple Threat Award.”  Finalists are recognized for their theatre accomplishments and community leadership while participating in the Trust’s Spotlight Education program. The “Triple Threat Award” recognizes outstanding individual achievement for junior or senior high school students who excel in singing, acting and dancing.  Nelson has already been through two levels of auditions and will perform as a “Triple Threat” finalist on June 13.  He will also perform on June 12 with fellow De students and with an ensemble of students from other schools.

Twelve “Triple Threat” finalists will perform at the Spotlight Showcase each night and ultimately, four winners will be honored with the Spotlight Education Broadway Experience, presented by Sun Country Airlines, an all-expenses paid trip to New York City to meet with industry professionals, participate in workshops and attend Broadway shows.

In addition to Nelson, Sophie Braga `17 and Sullivan Rice `20 will be performing as featured dancers at the Showcase.  Elsa Lundin `17, Katie Wojda `17, Ali Thornton `19, Billy Rushman `19, Jessica Wheeler `18 and Nelson will be performing one of the selections from the March production of “Urinetown,” and Calvin Matson `20 and Asante Samuels `17 will also perform as part of a multi-school ensemble.

Very limited single-seat tickets remain at

As reported last month, the DeLaSalle Theatre program, earned 20 awards from the Hennepin Theatre Trust Spotlight Education Program for its production of “Urinetown,” eleven awards for the entire production and nine for individual performance.   Kudos to all the theatre students and program directors, Farrah and James Buffington!  Without question, the Islander theatre program is second to none and is a source of pride for the entire DeLaSalle community.
