Alumni Weekend Nears!

Alumni Weekend is right around the corner! On August 11-13, hundreds of alumni and friends will be returning to the Island for an exciting slate of events and opportunities to reconnect. The weekend kicks off on Thursday, August 11 with the annual Hall of Fame ceremony, where we will honor 6 individuals who have contributed in significant ways to the DeLaSalle community. On Friday August 11, golfers of all skills will converge at Majestic Oaks Golf Course for the annual Alumni & Friends Golf Tournament. To close out the weekend, alumni from the classes of 1956 and 1966 will be holding reunions and fondly remembering their experiences as Islanders. Tours of the new Center for Innovative Learning and Mass will also be offered to all alumni on this day. Registration for any or all of these events is still open; click here if you would like to participate!

Welcome New Islanders!

We are rapidly approaching the beginning of the new school year! As teachers and students return to the Island this month, we would like to extend a warm welcome to the families of our 9th graders and transfer students. We are very excited for a new year with new faces! The class of 2020 features 195 students coming from over 80 different middle schools, from all across the Twin Cities area. Over 400 applications were submitted for these spots; interest in DeLaSalle remains tremendously high! We are proud of the diversity and ability of this new class; they are a reflection of the real world. We look forward to watching these young students grow and represent DeLaSalle in the classroom, on fields and stages, and beyond!

Mass of the Holy Spirit

The first Mass of the new school year will be a very special one indeed. DeLaSalle is honored and excited to welcome Archbishop Bernard Hebda to the Island, leading Mass for the community for the first time. Archbishop Hebda will be celebrating the Mass of the Holy Spirit and blessing the Center for Innovative Learning. The Mass & Blessing will be held on August 31st from 1-3 pm with a reception to follow.

Brother Nick Celebrates 70th Jubilee

Congratulations to Br. Nick Geimer, FSC, who celebrated his 70th jubilee. Geimer, an 88-year-old retired Brother who lives in the DeLaSalle community and has shared his mechanical, woodworking, and craft skills with the school over the years, was recognized as one of 11 jubilarians by his fellow Brothers and Lasallians at the Midwest District’s annual retreat at Lewis University. He is pictured here at this spring’s Founder’s Day Mass. Also honored was Br. Jerome Cox ‘56 for his 60th jubilee.

Islanders Immersed at Lasallian School in Montana

Twelve Islanders immersed themselves in Native American culture by participating in the OKI-NI-SOO-KA-WA or “Come and See” immersion experience at the De La Salle Blackfeet school in Browning, Montana. Islanders cleaned the school, wiped iPads, and worked in the school’s thrift store during the experience, which was coordinated through the DeLaSalle Office of Lasallian MInistry. Students also witnessed a grand entry, dance competition, drumming and singing, parade, and rodeo as part of the North American Indian Days happening in the community at the same time. They also had the unique opportunity to celebrate Mass with Helena diocesan Bishop George Thomas.

Staff Serve at Sharing & Caring Hands

A group of current and former DeLaSalle staff served the evening meal on July 14 at Sharing & Caring Hands in Minneapolis. “We are blessed to have such dedicated professionals who lead by example of service to others,” Physical Education teacher Mary Beth Barry ‘79 said of her colleagues who volunteered.

Pro Athlete Derrick Robinson ’00 Hosts Summer Camp

Islanders are always giving back to their community. For the past 1o years, Derreck Robinson – NFL player and a member of the DeLaSalle Class of 2000 – has sponsored and directed the Green Machine Football & Cheerleading Camp for ages 6 – 14. This year’s free camp was held at McRae Park in South Minneapolis July 7-9th. Learning the fundamentals of football and cheerleading, the eager participants and their families were excited and thankful for opportunity to have a camp like this. The youth who participate receive lunch daily and had fun learning from Robinson and his volunteering staff – including current De football players.

Update Your Contact Information!

Calling all Islanders! In the next year, we will be rolling out a multitude of new opportunities for alumni and friends to get involved in the community. One of our main goals is to improve and increase our contact information, so that we can better serve you and inform you about chances for reconnection! As part of this project, we are looking for volunteers who would be willing to help track down classmates that we have lost touch with. If you are interested in assisting in this effort, please contact Christian Glanville at christian.glanville@delasalle.com. In the meantime, please take two minutes to update your contact information here so that you don’t miss out!
