Two Islanders have advanced to the Minnesota State Track and Field Championships
Claudia Partridge ‘18 and Mia Sennes ‘19 will compete in the tournament at Hamline University. Partridge is one of 19 athletes who will compete in the Class AA girls’ high jump on Friday, June 10 at 9:00am. The starting height for the bar is 4-feet-10-inches. Last year’s state champion cleared a bar set at 5-feet-7-inches. Partridge qualified for the state tournament by jumping 5-feet-4-inches in the Section 6AA meet last week, the fifth highest mark among the qualifiers in section meets.
Likewise, Sennes will compete against 18 other athletes in the Class AA girls’ triple jump on Saturday, June 11 at 9:00am. The triple jump is a form of the long jump in which runners run and jump three times before landing in a pit. Sennes qualified for the state tournament with a jump of 37-feet-7-inches, the fourth best qualifying jump among the 19 competitors and just four-and-a-half inches shy of the mark set by last year’s state champion.
Both the girls’ and boys’ track-and-field programs performed admirably at their section meets last weekend. Sam Hoyt `16 narrowly missed a state berth, finishing third in the 400 meter final, and likewise, Julian Wright `19, made the 100-meter final and finished just .07 from the state qualifying time.
