Celebrating the Class of 2016:

Baccalaureate Mass & Senior Awards

Class of 2016 graduates gathered with their families to celebrate our faith at the annual Baccalaureate Mass and to be recognized for their accomplishments at the Senior Awards Program following the Mass. Father Kevin Kenney ’78 presided over the Mass, with 9th grade students from the Concert Choir leading the worship under the direction of Mark Capecchi. Students were honored with department, academic, and activity awards as well as the most prestigious awards, the Islander and DeLaSalle awards. By vote of the entire staff, Samm Jones (pictured above, going to Northwestern University this fall) and Marissa Mohammed (going to Macalester College) received the DeLaSalle Awards for all-around excellence in academics, faith, service, leadership and responsibility. as well as the heralded Islander and DeLaSalle awards. Click Here for a full list of award winners. Congratulations to all graduates and to those who were honored, DeLaSalle thanks you for your contributions to the community!

2016 Commencement Ceremony

Continuing a tradition that Islanders have upheld for more than 100 years, the Class of 2016 graduated at the Basilica of St. Mary on May 19th. Student speakers Marissa Mohammed and Annie Dubner spoke of the lessons learned, growing up, and embracing the opportunity of joining the historic ranks of DeLaSalle alumni.

This year’s commencement speaker was Dr. Mary Hinton, President of the College of Saint Benedict. Dr. Hinton spoke passionately to the roles of parents and staff in support of the graduates seated before her. 98% of these graduates will be continuing their education in the fall. Click Here to see where some of them are headed. Good luck, Class of 2016!

The Legacy Continues:

Welcoming the Class of 2020

Islanders welcomed several members of the Class of 2020 and their parents to DeLaSalle at the annual (and optional) Welcome Party on May 14. Current students led 130 of the 195 incoming 9th graders through icebreaker and team building activities while also teaching them DeLaSalle traditions like the school clap and battle cries. Incoming 9th grade parents, meanwhile, attended a “Meet and Greet” reception, sponsored by the De Parent Association. They gained valuable insight from current De students and parents.

2016-2017 Student Council Elected

On May 26th, the new student council took office with energy and exuberance. Newly-elected officers include Vice-President Nathan Brand ’17, Secretary Emma Kane ’17, Public Relations Officer Ricardo Vaquero-Santos ’17 and President Miller Balley ’17. President-elect Balley was elected on a platform that highlighted the importance of school spirit. “I want to make people look at DeLaSalle and say, ‘Wow! I want to be a part of that, or I am so glad to be a part of this legacy.’” To see the full list of election winners, Click Here.

DeLaSalle Theatre Tops in SpotLight Awards

Congratulations to the DeLaSalle Theatre program, whose production of “The Addams Family” earned 15 awards from the Hennepin Theatre Trust SpotLight Education Program.  The SpotLight program includes educational and evaluation resources for high schools across the state.  DeLaSalle is one of 88 high schools to receive critical evaluation of their school musical by a professional theatre evaluator.  No high school received more awards in 2015-16 than DeLaSalle.

“The Addams Family,” one of six different productions of the De theatre Program in 2015-16, played to packed houses over two weekends in March. The cast will perform in a SpotLight Showcase on June 12 at 7:00pm at the State Theater in downtown Minneapolis because DeLaSalle’s production  was named for Outstanding Overall Performance.  According to criteria outlined by the Theatre Trust, “These students who audition not only have talent for singing, dancing and acting, but also show leadership ability and efforts to better their community through their art.”

Congratulations and good luck to all performers. Visit Hennepin Theatre Trust for more information and purchase tickets to the SpotLight Showcase here.

Lasallian Volunteers Serve at DeLaSalle

For the last several years, DeLaSalle has been in association with the Lasallian Volunteer Program (LV) – a program of the De La Salle Christian Brothers of the Lasallian Region of North America. LV provides dedicated, well-trained volunteers for one or more years of service to schools and agencies of the Brothers whose mission is to serve the poor. Acting out of faith, rooted in the Gospel, and sharing community with the Brothers and other Lasallians, the volunteers empower the poor by personalized service primarily through education. Lasallian Volunteers change the world for the better and discover themselves transformed in the process.

During the month of May, the DeLaSalle community bid farewell to Lasallian Volunteer, Antwa’nae Briars who served two years working in the Office of Lasallian Ministry and Admissions. DeLaSalle also will welcome LV John Schatz back (serving his second year in the Office Guidance and Counseling) and newest LV, Viviana Ortiz, a graduate from University of Arizona, who will arrive in August, and serve in the Offices of Lasallian Ministry and Guidance and Counseling.

Donors and supporters heard from President Barry Lieske, AFSC about the progress that the school has made over the past year. In addition, a panel of five graduating students spoke about the highlights of their DeLaSalle experience and shared about their plans for the future.
