July 2015 Update
Alumni & Friends –

The countdown begins for Alumni Weekend 2015! We are just over six weeks from one of the largest events of our summer. Alumni, friends and the reunion classes are getting riled up and are ready to have a good time at the Alumni & Friends Golf Tournament, Hall of Fame Ceremony and their own reunion celebrations. Reunions will be held at DeLaSalle and throughout the city. Majestic Oaks Golf Course will again host us – what a perfect venue for golf and socializing – and we hope to raise more scholarship money than ever before. This year, we will recognize and induct into our Hall of Fame five wonderful people from the DeLaSalle community. Remember, if you are unable to attend these events, you can always show your support by donating raffle prizes, volunteering, or even sharing on your Facebook or Twitter #AlumniWeekend2K15! Let’s get excited and continue to spread the good news of DeLaSalle!

For more information regarding Alumni Weekend and Reunion Festivities, please visit the Alumni Weekend Webpage. If your class has not yet formed a committee, it’s not too late! Contact Jessica Luckett at 612-676-7687 or and she will help you get things going!

Construction is underway on our latest facility improvements and the Center for Innovative Learning. The bulldozers are pulling up the foundation behind the school. Before we know it, the CIL will be complete! Click Here to read more about the project. Visit the CIL webpage to see it change before your eyes with updated photos as the project progresses.

We invite you to stay connected throughout the summer. We understand if you can’t visit, but help so we can keep you in the loop through our e-newsletters and mailers! You may update your contact information with us by e-mailing or completing our online form.

Remember, our E-newsletter will now come to you at the beginning of each month to ensure that you have the opportunity to engage in all of the great things that are happening at DeLaSalle.

Lasallian Youth Gathering #LYG2K15

From June 21st to June 26th, Lasallian youth from all over the Midwest joined together for a week of prayer, reflection, service, and community building at Lewis University in Romeoville, IL. Seven DeLaSalle High School students and two moderators (CJ Hallman ‘02 and Jessica Luckett ‘08) spent time with Lasallians from:

  • Christian Brothers High School (Memphis, TN)

  • Christian Brothers College High School (St. Louis, MO)

  • Montini Catholic High School (Lombard, IL)

  • Bishop Kelley High School (Tulsa, OK)

  • Cretin-Derham Hall High School (St. Paul, MN)

  • DeLaSalle Institute (Chicago, IL)

  • Totino Grace High School (Fridley, MN)

and focused on the theme for the week, “Seeing with the eyes of Faith.” Students and moderators had time to reflect in small groups and had – to themselves – 45 minutes of prayer time each day. They learned more about the Lasallian tradition, scripture and prayer through keynote presentations and served at Feed My Starving Children where they packaged and boxed 46,008 meals – which will feed 126 kids for a year. The group also got a chance to see downtown Chicago and even attend a professional Chicago FIRE soccer game! At the end of the week, most students found it difficult to say goodbye. They summed up their week as rejuvenating, refreshing, reflective, and fun! They realized they are a part of something much bigger than themselves and that they will never be alone in the Lasallian world. The group is excited for LYG 2016 next summer in Memphis, TN where the focus will be service. #LasallianWorld #LYG2K15 #Prayer.

Colorado Service Students Return

Taking hands-on action to rebuild part of a state destroyed by wildfires in 2013, DeLaSalle students and staff spent their first week of summer break putting up log erosion barriers, smoothing out walking trails, and removing dead wood and other debris from the national forests of Colorado. Forty-one students and six chaperones mixed into their service experience visits to the U.S. Olympic Training Center and the University of Colorado along with whitewater rafting and horseback riding. This trip “has shown us parts of ourselves…that we were previously unaware of and allowed us to push ourselves in ways we didn’t know we could,” one student wrote in the trip blog. Follow the trip on the Colorado Service Trip Blog

Students Serve at De La Salle Blackfeet School

in Browning, Montana

Eleven DeLaSalle students will board an Amtrak train in a couple of weeks to participate in an immersion experience at the De La Salle Blackfeet School in Browning, Montana. De La Salle Blackfeet School, which the Christian Brothers opened in 2001, serves students and their families living on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. These Islanders will participate in the OKI-NI-SOO-KA-WA (“Come and see”) immersion program first created by students from Yakima, Washington-based La Salle High School. Along with staff members Peg Hodapp and CJ Hallman, students will have direct contact with the people of the Blackfeet Nation, as well as prayer and reflection in the context of community, simplicity, and service-learning.

In 2001 the De La Salle Christian Brothers of the Midwest District opened a new San Miguel School in Browning, Montana. De La Salle Blackfeet School serves students and their families living on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. Since 2002, several schools throughout the country have participated in this weeklong immersion into the culture and life of the Blackfeet Nation.

Underclassmen Finish the Year Strong!

Each year, along with recognizing graduating seniors for their accomplishments, each department recognizes underclassmen for their academic achievements over the year. See which students received awards by clicking here. Also, congratulations to these Islanders who made the Second Semester Honor Roll. #IslanderAcademics

So Much to Learn:

Why not do it in other countries?

ITALY: Most people only see the finished product. But, for a group of 33 Islanders, a two-week trip to Italy last month offered a rare glimpse inside the process used to make foods like cheese and chocolate. From their base at the Lasallian school Collegio San Giuseppe in Turin, students took cooking classes from top local chefs, explored one of Europe’s oldest science academies, toured a winery, shopped at the largest open market in Europe, and studied native flora and fauna through a hike in the Alps and a whale-watching excursion at sea. Click here to see pictures and read more about the trip.

BRAZIL: DeLaSalle and the University of Minnesota are teaming up for an academic trip to Brazil July 27-August 7, where Islanders will study the peoples of African descent, the evolution of African American culture, and comparative race relations. Students can earn university credit for their participation in the trip and “Introduction to African American Studies” course. The course will be taught by U of M professor Dr. Rose Brewer, doctoral candidate Vanessa Abanu and DeLaSalle English teacher Ms. Shante Reed ‘98 and Social Studies teacher Mr. Brad Casey.

The Walker/Beha Golf Tournament Raises Funds for DeLaSalle High School

On the first Tuesday of every June, alumni from the DeLaSalle Class of 1958 and a few Southwest guys get together for their annual Walker/Beha Golf Tournament – a tournament to raise money for De and Southwest held in memory of their friends Mike Walker ‘58 and Bill Beha. The tournament, hosted by Bob Praus ‘58 at the Red Wing Country Club, had a magnificent turnout. With great weather and awesome prizes and donations given by Mike Busyn, Chuck Neerland ‘58, Pat Walker ‘68 and the DeLaSalle Alumni Office, all of the participants were excited to enjoy a round of golf with great company. Congratulations to the winning team, Pat Walker, Adam Pederson, Terry Pederson and Curt Bundy, winning with a score of 65.

The DeLaSalle Boys Basketball team will receive check for $800.00 – proceeds from the Walker/Beha Golf Tournament. A note from Pete Chubb ‘58, coordinator of the tournament, “Mike and Bill, I know, were smiling down on us yesterday with the great weather, and many stories that were told about their golf games.”

Deadline for Sexual Abuse Claims Against Archdiocese Draws Near

As the deadline for filing a notice of claim draws near, DeLaSalle is sharing this notice with our broad community of families, alumni and friends.  Our school is deeply saddened for anyone who may have been a victim of sexual abuse.  We continue to pray for healing.  For those who may not know, the DeLaSalle Board of Trustees and school administrators have had in place a policy on sexual abuse for decades. This policy is reviewed on an annual basis and updated as needed.   We also have a rigid code of conduct and require background checks for all employees and volunteers, and since 2005, all employees and volunteers must also pass a mandatory training course in sexual abuse awareness.

If you have an allegation of sexual abuse against the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, you must file a notice of claim by August 3, 2015, according to an order by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, which is overseeing the Archdiocese’s bankruptcy proceeding. You may learn more about the claims process, including how to file a claim, by clicking here.
