Like the blooming lilacs along 1 DeLaSalle Drive, the students and staff continue to bloom as we enter the final weeks of the 2014-15 school year. We recently completed our Enrollment Orientation for the Class of 2019, in which we have registered 240 incoming 9th graders. While some families are still making final decisions, we are confident that we can replace the 203 students who will graduate this month. In short, we begin to say goodbye to the Class of 2015 while we continue to welcome the Class of 2019!
We invite you to join us on the Island for many of our May events. We understand if you can’t visit, but help so we can keep you in the loop! You may update your contact information with us by e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org or completing our online form.
Remember, our E-newsletter will now come to you at the beginning of each month to ensure that you have the opportunity to engage in all of the great things that are happening at DeLaSalle.

Founder’s Day offers Lasallians an opportunity to celebrate the legacy of St. John Baptist de La Salle and our role in the Lasallian Family. Traditionally celebrated on May 15, we are celebrating Founder’s Day on Thursday, May 7 at 1:30pm in the Main Gym. Bishop Andrew Cozzens, auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, will celebrate the Mass. Brother Mark Snodgrass, auxiliary visitor of the Midwest District of Christian Brothers, will join us as we remember three Christian Brothers who died this year for the deep impact they left on DeLaSalle – Brother Dominic Kennedy, Br. Cyril Litecky, and Br. Basil Rothweiler. We will also recognize faculty and staff recipients of the Distinguished Lasallian Educator award and the Liemandt Excellence in Teaching Award along with student recipients of the Alumni Legacy and Farrell scholarships, Jefferson Awards, and Giving Tree Scholars.

Lasallian Ministry Gets Ready for the
15th Annual Starry Night Prom
Starry Night Prom is a semi-formal prom for people with disabilities in the Twin Cities community that happens annually on the first Saturday in May. Hosted by DeLaSalle High School’s Lasallian Ministry, the event is free and open to the public. The students who host this prom prepare by attending seminars and sensitivity training as well as planning the food service and festive decorations that transform the gymnasium into a beautiful dance hall. More than 1,500 guests attended in 2014. This year’s theme, “An Elegant Evening Under the Stars” will make each guest feel as if they are movie stars walking down the red carpet! We anticipate this event to be a night each guest will remember. To view more, click here.
Islanders Spring Clean!
For many Islanders, DeLaSalle is home and on April 18th, 60+ students, staff and friends of DeLaSalle did some spring cleaning! The Island Clean Up Crew, led by the Parent Association and members of the DeLaSalle G.R.E.E.N (Give Real Effort for Ecology and Nature) Team, collected 20+ bags of garbage and removed 200 feet of rubber hose. This project helped brighten up DeLaSalle and the entire Nicollet Island community.
Islander Academics: AP Exams
A record number of DeLaSalle students (234) will take a record number of Advanced Placement (AP) exams (545) during the first two weeks in May. Students can earn college credit depending on the results of their exams, which measure how well students have mastered college-level coursework. DeLaSalle offers AP courses in English, Fine Arts, Math, Modern Languages, Science and Social Studies. Students who take AP classes are required to take the AP test in May. #IslanderAcademics #GoodLuckIslanders

Alumni Fun Facts!
Matt Detloff ’07
Matt Detloff attended Saint John’s University for undergrad where he majored in Social Science with a triple minor in Secondary Education, History, and Music. He then attended Saint Mary’s University for his graduate degree. He received a Master of Arts in Educational Instruction.
Detloff is finishing his fourth year at Maple Grove Senior High where he teaches 12th grade economics, 11th grade world history, and a comparative religions elective. He stays busy at MGSH coaching football and track and field while also running Action for Reaction which is MGSH’s student wellness advocacy program. Detloff states, “My biggest accomplishment is the MGSH Global Outreach & Leadership Development program, or G.O.L.D. program.” The G.O.L.D. program gives MGSH students the opportunity to serve across the globe and develop leadership skills for use throughout their lives. In the first two years, almost 100 students have traveled to Jamaica and Costa Rica to help in school, orphanage, and environmental based projects. Their 2016 adventure will be taking them to South Africa. Detloff continues, “My job as a teacher, coach, and trip coordinator is heavily influenced by the Lasallian lessons I learned in my time on the Island. I hope to be back in De’s classrooms and community in the future but only time will tell. Until then I will continue with joy, while helping the next generation write their own story.”
Matt Detloff recently became engaged to Jaycee Nelson and bought his first home. He will be getting married June of 2016.
Felecia Connor ’14
After graduating from DeLaSalle last year, Felecia Connor continued a family tradition and became a sailor in the United States Navy. She is of the fourth generation of Connors to serve our country. While in boot camp, Felecia’s hard work and determination allowed her to advance in rank to become an E2 Seaman Apprentice. She temporarily resides in Pensacola, Florida and is finishing up her schooling to become a Cryptological Technician. Second in her class, Felecia will soon graduate and be stationed in Augusta, Georgia where she will continue her post-secondary education. Mary Connor, mother and De graduate from the Class of 1995 states, “DeLaSalle’s tight knit, diverse, faith- based community helped prepare Felecia for life, work and service to society.”
Did You Know?
Did you know that each year DeLaSalle offers $2.8 million in need-based financial assistance to over half its students?
Rooted in our Lasallian tradition, we are committed to making our quality, college-prep education accessible to all families in Minneapolis and surrounding area. Many families make great sacrifices to be at DeLaSalle and it’s with excitement that we will proudly send off members from the Class of 2015 knowing that their time at DeLaSalle has successfully prepared them for college, career, and contributions to a global society.
