Bishop Cozzens: Catholic Schools Play Key Role in Spreading Joy of the Gospel

Catholic educators play a key role in spreading the joy of the Gospel, Bishop Andrew Cozzens told DeLaSalle staff March 17, as he reflected on Pope Francis’s apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel). The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis auxiliary bishop described the work that faculty and staff do each day with students as a new evangelization, or creating a personal encounter with Christ. Staff has studied the document throughout this school year, meeting about once a month to discuss in small groups the way Pope Francis’s message can be lived and applied to the mission of DeLaSalle.

 DeLaSalle Community Reflects at

Lenten Prayer Service

Reverend Marchelle Hallman, mother of DeLaSalle alumni CJ ‘02 and Johnelle ‘04, delivered a Lenten reflection Wednesday, March 25, encouraging the school community to “go all in” as we celebrate Holy Week and Easter. Reverend Hallman used the story “Ragman” by Walter Wangerin, Jr. to demonstrate actions that Islanders can take to live the Gospel message of “Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40).

Service to Others: Youthlink Delivery

The DeLaSalle community collected more than 6,000 personal hygiene items during Social Justice Awareness Week (Feb. 23-27) to benefit homeless teens served by the Minneapolis nonprofit Youth Link. Students donated the items (tampons are counted individually) in their first hour classes. A group of students who participate in Lasallian Ministry personally delivered the donations to YouthLink on March 17.

Development Team Travels to Arizona and Florida to Engage Alumni

Over 70 guests joined our development team at the Annual Alumni Luncheons in Tucson, Arizona and Naples, Florida. Each event turned out wonderfully as President Barry Lieske, AFSC was able to share the great news of what is happening at DeLaSalle. Alumni and Friends in attendance are able to ask questions, fellowship over a great meal and, at the Florida event, hear from an Alumni Guest Speaker. This year, Anna Mazig ‘04, JD, a Bridge Fellow at the Minnesota Department of Human Services, spoke with our guests on her journey after DeLaSalle and the impact of her Lasallian experience. Her compelling thoughts and words resonated with many of the guests. These luncheons are open to all alumni and friends that live in or are visiting in the area. The lunches are complimentary of the DeLaSalle Development Department.
